Lake Placid was the host of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games. It is known worldwide as the site of the 1980 Olympic semifinal hockey match between the Soviet Union and the United States Of America. Lake Placid is a 30 Minute Drive from Camp Eastwood. In The Summer, enjoy the many shops, dining options, craft beverage tasting and spend some time down on Mirror Lake.

In Lake Placid you’ll discover The Olympic Center. In the winter, step outside  to skate on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, or step inside the Olympic Center to experience the rink on which the United States defeated the Soviet Union in The Miracle On Ice. Also Inside is the 1932 Rink. The Lake Placid Olympic Museum is filled with memorabilia, photos, and video footage from the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games

The famous Whiteface Mountain is located 45 Minutes from Camp Eastwood. Whiteface provides a world-class skiing experience to skiers and snowboarders from around the world. In the summer you can take a drive over to Wilmington and experience the Veteran’s Memorial Highway. The road will take you within .1 miles of the summit where you can park and enjoy a simple walk to the Weather Station at the Summit, where there are ample opportunities for Adirondack-backed photographs.

In the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, Tupper Lake’s Public Observatory provides one of the best destinations for stargazing in the East. The combination of low-light pollution, low humidity, and high altitude provide nearly ideal conditions for night sky viewing. It is here where The Adirondack Public Observatory has been laying its roots into the dark side of a hill on Big Wolf Road.

Chapel Island is an Interdenominational Chapel which is on its own island at the south end of Upper Saranac Lake, blending well into the Adirondack landscape nestled amongst tall pines, overlooking majestic mountain peaks and surrounded by sparkling water.  Boat transportation is available every Sunday morning in season.  You can get there by boat from Camp Eastwood on Upper Saranac Lake.  Please check the Chapel Island website for hours of service and more information on transportation by boat.

Ten Best Things to do in the Summer in the Adirondacks

Go Hiking on the Best Trails in New York: Explore scenic trails, forested paths, wide-opened wilderness, waterfalls, and summits with amazing views in the Adirondack Mountains. We recommend a few nearby options to Camp Eastwood that are worth considering. Ampersand Mountain is about 5 miles away. It is moderately challenging. In the same parking lot as Ampersand you can do a flat ½ mile hike to Middle Saranac Lake. There is a beach there (lake beach), just a fun hike swim hike back thing. There is also a “canoe carry” trail right near Camp Eastwood which is fun to do.  Also Panthar Mountain (5 minutes from house, Great for families). Hike to Middle Saranac Lake (10 minutes from house. A flat 1 mile hike in and out, to beautiful Middle Saranac Lake and a beach. Great for all.) And Stony Creek Ponds (5 minutes from House. Also great for families).

Take a Boat Tour: Historic tours, sightseeing tours, fishing tours, and charter cruises on the beautiful lakes of the Adirondacks. Guests of Camp Eastwood can rent our luxury 24′ pontoon boat in Upper Saranac Lake.

This is our family home (we have a very large family!) on beautiful Upper Saranac Lake. We have been travelling to the Adirondacks for 2 generations and love them and this wonderful lake. We enjoy sharing it with great families when we are not using it, and make every effort we can to have our guest experience the same priceless moments we have when we are there.
